Wow! What a captivating story joint knowledge and experience can create! But what else could you expect when two of Norway´s best crime fiction authors decide to start working together? Jørn Lier Horst and Thomas Enger are the internationally bestselling authors of the William Wisting series and Henning Juul series respectively. My expectations were high when I started reading their co-written book Death Deserved and were they fulfilled. The novel really combines their different strengths in a wonderful way. Horst, being an investigator at the Norwegian police for many years, is a master of realistic and suspenseful police procedurals and former journalist Thomas Enger has achieved fame by his memorable and emotionally engaging stories with compelling characters.
A countdown drama
When former long-distance runner and celebrity Sonja Nordstrøm never shows up at the launch of her controversial autobiography, celebrity blogger Emma Ramm visits her home and finds alarming signs of a struggle inside. A bib with the number “one” has been pinned to the TV. Police officer Alexander Blix is appointed to take care of the missing-person investigation and he gets really worried when carefully calculated clues show up at different locations in and around Oslo. Will number one be followed by a two? Both Blix and Ramm realize that the clock is ticking and that they have to co-operate if they are going to find and stop a merciless killer with a rare thirst for attention and spotlights.
An unusual investigative duo
The human need and want of fame is a main theme in the story and the narrative raises many interesting questions in these days of selfies and social media. Police officer Alexander Blix and celebrity reporter Emma Ramm come from different worlds, but they can use their different contacts and networks to piece together a larger picture of the killer and his plans. They are both gripping characters with their own personal burdens and they have more in common than you may think from the start. Besides, they are very committed to their jobs and more and more team up as a fantastic crime solving duo in a story filled with action and suspense.
Death Deserved just makes me want more books about Alexander Blix and Emma Ramm and luckily the next installment seems to be on its way.
